Hong Kong's Statutory Minimum Wage rose from HKD 42.1 per hour to HKD 43.1 per hour with effect from 1 May 2026, following the previous rate introduced on 1 May 2025.
The monthly monetary cap for employers to record the total number of hours worked by employees also rose to HKD 17,600 per month alongside the new SMW rate.
The Labour Department states the minimum wage calculation is total hours worked in the wage period multiplied by the SMW rate, now HKD 43.1 per hour from 1 May 2026.
Our perspective
Compliance is not only about avoiding risk. Done well, it shows that a company respects its people and takes employment responsibilities seriously.
Our advice to HR partners
Line managers should understand basic working hours, leave approval, performance documentation and cost implications before making promises to staff.
What payroll teams should review
Employers should review contracts, payroll setup, MPF records, roster and overtime records, commission terms, bonus wording and termination payment workflows.
Candidates and employees should understand hourly rate, allowances, commission, overtime, benefits and probation terms. Clear pay information helps them compare offers fairly.
